Security Hardware

The Commission discourages the installation of metal security bars and grates on the exterior of openings on buildings located in local historic districts. Any application for metal security bars and grates must be referred to the Commission for approval except on unrated structures where the staff may approve the application, if it is determined that the installation does not detract from the appearance of the district. The Commission encourages the use of other traditional security methods, such as shutters or night blinds, instead of the application of metal bars or grates. Other nontraditional methods also preferred are: glass areas glazed with heavy tempered glass, protective bars located on the interior of the door or sash; and electrical warning devices when they are installed in the least conspicuous manner. Where metal bars or grilles are considered to be the only acceptable method for securing a building, the Commission encourages the use of unornamented units that are fabricated to fit the opening and correspond to window muntins.
