Public Sidewalks

  1. PAVING

The materials required for public sidewalks are flagstone and brick. Neither new irregular or broken pieces nor glazed finishes are permitted.

Granite curbs are to be installed or retained. Existing traditional paving materials must be retained, matched and repaired. Existing cracked flagstone, if not a safety hazard, should be retained.

Acceptable paving patterns may be obtained from the Vieux Carré Commission office.

  2. HITCHING POSTS (now used to prevent vehicles from parking on sidewalks)

    1. Height: Approximately 42" above sidewalk

    2. Spacing: Approximately 10' to 12' apart and 18" from the curb

    3. Materials: Steel pipe or cast iron, 3" or 4" diameter

    4. Installation: Imbed a minimum of 24" below sidewalk in 12" diameter of concrete

    5. Design: Sharp or pointed finials should not be used to avoid injury to pedestrians

    6. Note: All installations are subject to approval by the Department of Streets as well as the Vieux Carré Commission.

  3. SIDEWALK TREES

Although the Commission does not encourage the addition of sidewalk trees, sidewalk trees may be approved relative to the following criteria:

    1. All applications shall be received by the Vieux Carré Commission for an aesthetic determination.

    2. The applicant must be the owner of the property behind the adjacent sidewalk area in question.

    3. All applications shall include a sidewalk plan of the area affected, including the exact location of each proposed tree; the type, size and characteristics of trees; specifications as to size of sidewalk opening and material for borders, gratings, etc. and other data as requested by the Commission.

    4. The Parkway and Parks Commission assumes responsibility for maintenance of such plantings and all approved plantings may be removed by the City upon notice.

    5. The Architectural Committee shall be empowered to review these applications and issue comments to the agencies having jurisdiction (Departments of Streets and Parkway & Parks Commission).

    6. The following species of trees are recommended for sidewalk trees:

      1. Crepe Myrtle - Lagerstroemia indica

      2. American Holly - Ilex opaca

      3. Cherry Laurel - Prunus caroliniana

      4. American Hornbeam, Ironwood - Carpinus caroliniana

      5. Magnolia (Sweet Bay) - Magnolia virginiana

  4. SIDEWALK FURNITURE

Since the sidewalk is public property, sidewalk furniture is not permitted and may be removed by the City upon notice.
