Welcome to The City of New Orleans Human Relations Commission

The New Orleans Human Relations Commission is a Municipal Agency which enforces the City's Human Relations Rights Laws. The Commission employs a staff of three and maintains two offices in New Orleans. The Commission has citywide authority and accepts complaints from all citizens and visitors, to New Orleans, who believe they have been discriminated against.

 Announcements and Upcoming Events
The New Orleans Human Relations Commission will hold its regular monthly meeting on the third Thursday of every month. The Proposed agenda includes staff and litigation reports; funding projects; mediation program updates, and public participation.

What Does the Human Relations Committe Do?

The Staff
  • Accepts complaints of discrimination from persons alleging violations of New Orleans Chapter 86 Human Rights Laws.
  • Investigates complaints in a fair and inparital manner.
  • Attempts early settlement of complaints, whenever possible.
  • Dismisses complaints when no violation of New Orleans Human Rights Laws have occurred.
  • Conciliates complaints when New Orleans Human Rights Laws have been violated.
  • Gives technical assistance and advice on the City's Human Rights Laws
The Commissioners
  • Hold public hearings to consider cases where conciliation efforts have failed.
  • Issue decisions applying the City's Human Rights Laws to individuals or class action cases.
  • Order reinstatement, possible back-pay, or other appropriate relief to complainants.
  • Order the elimination of discriminatory practices.
  • Enforce Commission decisions and orders, in compliance with Chapter 86 of the New Orleans City Code.

If you believe that you have experienced discrimination, you may contact the Commission. The Commission Staff will advise you of your rights under New Orleans Human Rights Laws and when appropriate, will assist you in filing a confedential complaint with this office.
