12/31/08 - 12-12-31 Illegal Fireworks in Orleans Parish
Fireworks can result in severe burns, fractures, scars, lifelong disfigurement or even death. The thousands of serious injuries each year typically harm the eyes, head, or hands and are mostly reported in states, such as Louisiana. According to the National Fire Protection Association, in 2006, 9,200 fireworks-related injuries were treated in U.S. hospital emergency rooms. The trend in fireworks-related injuries has been mostly up since 1996, with spikes in 2000-2001, primarily due to celebrations around the advent of a new millennium, and in 2005. The highest injury rates were for children aged 10 to 14.

12/30/08 - Marsh Fire New Orleans East Paris Rd.
New Orleans Fire Department (NOFD) is monitoring a large marsh fire in New Orleans East, located approximately 1000yds west of Paris Road and the Intercoastal Waterway. The fire is in an area that is completely inaccessible to NOFD equipment. The NOFD is attempting to have the U.S. Coast Guard do an aerial reconnaissance, to determine the total area involved. The fire is in an extremely isolated area and poses no threat to citizens or property.

12/22/08 - Fatal Camp Street Fire
On Monday, December 22, 2008, at 6:42 a.m. the New Orleans Fire Department responded to a 911 call to 4812 Camp Street. Companies arrived within 5 minutes to find a one story wood frame double engulfed in flames and quickly got the blaze under control, two residents escaped but an 80 year old woman perished in the rear of the house. Family members were awakened by smoke and heat and attempted to rescue her but the fire was too advanced. There was a space heater in the area of origin and no smoke detectors present in the home however, fire fighters found a to do list on an armoire in the front of the house with a listing to purchase two smoke detectors. The death has been labeled unclassified until the coroner does an autopsy. The cause of the fire is under investigation.

12/12/08 - Student Arrested For Aggravated Arson
New Orleans Fire Department (NOFD) Fire Investigators and New Orleans Police Department Officers arrested a student for aggravated arson. NOFD personnel were dispatched at 9:30 a.m. to a one alarm fire at Mary D. Coghill Elementary School 5500 Piety Street. Once on the scene they found an extinguished fire that originated and was contained in the male staff bathroom. The fire was extinguished by school staff. The estimated fire damage was approximately several thousand dollars.

12/9/08 - Three Alarm Fire at Vacant Physician’s Office Building
Wednesday, December 10, 2008 at 8:21 p.m., New Orleans Fire Department (NOFD) personnel were dispatched to a three-alarm fire at Bienville and North Jeff Davis Parkway. The first company arrived at 8:25 p.m. finding smoke coming from a vacant four story masonry doctor’s office building near the old Lindy Boggs Hospital. Second and third alarms were struck immediately upon arrival. The fire originated on the fourth floor and consumed four rooms. Twenty-one units and sixty-eight fire department personnel responded to this incident, bringing the fire under control at 9:24 p.m. Activity related to vagrant occupation is suspected in this fire and it is currently under investigation.

The New Orleans, Jefferson Parish, Kenner and St. Bernard Parish Fire Departments are holding a joint press conference Wednesday, December 10, 2008 at 1:30 p.m. at Municipal Training Academy East 13400 Old Gentilly Road. The press conference will be held to remind citizens in the metro area of holiday fire prevention practices. Additionally, we will demonstrate how fast and easy it may be for a dry Christmas tree to burn.

12/9/08 - One Alarm Fire Douglass high School
New Orleans Fire Department (NOFD) personnel were dispatched to a one-alarm fire at 3820 Saint Claude Avenue, Fredrick Douglass Senior High School. This was the sixth fire at the school within six days. The fire originated and was contained in an empty Arts classroom on the second floor. The fire damaged one-fourth of the Arts classroom. Nine units and twenty-eight fire department personnel responded to this incident, bringing the fire under control within thirty minutes.

11/25/08 - Three-Alarm Fire 5135 Canal Blvd. (The Bulldog)
Tuesday, November 25, 2008 at 5:35 p.m., New Orleans Fire Department (NOFD) personnel were dispatched to a one-alarm fire at 5135 Canal Blvd., The Bulldog. Second and third alarms were struck immediately upon arrival. Twenty-one units and sixty-eight fire department personnel responded to this incident, bringing the fire under control at 6:14 p.m. The establishment was open at the time of the incident and there are no reported injuries. The origin and cause of the fire are currently under investigation.

11/24/08 - Automobile Fire with Fatality
Monday, November 24, 2008 at 7:22 p.m. the New Orleans Fire Department (NOFD) responded to 911 call of a dwelling fire at the corner of Haynes Blvd. and France Rd. NOFD personnel found a single passenger vehicle on fire at that location and during extinguishment the body of a single individual was found in the driver’s seat. Investigators from both the NOFD and the NOPD were on the scene and the cause of both fire and death are under investigation.

11/11/08 - One Alarm Fire at 1 French Market Place
New Orleans, LA. - NOFD responded to a one alarm fire at #1 French Market Place, Jimmy Buffet Margaritaville retail store in the French Quarters, within two minutes firefighters arrived on the scene to find a two story brick building with smoke coming out the upstairs window. Firefighters were able to contain the fire to the upstairs portion of the retail store.

10/27/08 - Two Alarm Fire 1518-20 South Robertson St; Arson Suspected, Suspect Arrested

New Orleans, LA. – Monday, October 27, 2008 at 4:06 a.m. the New Orleans Fire Department (NOFD) responded to a 911 call reporting a fire at 1518-20 South Robertson Street. Fire units arrived within three minutes to find a single story, vacant dwelling fully involved with fire. A New Orleans police officer, witness a male exiting the house and detained him until fire investigators arrived, after questioning he was arrested and booked into New Orleans parish jail. The fire quickly spread to 1514-16 South Robertson Street a single story, vacant dwelling and 1526 South Robertson Street, a single story, occupied dwelling. There were no utilities connected to the unoccupied structures.

10/1/08 - Three-Alarm Fire Displaces Family of Six

New Orleans, LA. – Wednesday, October 1, 2008 at 4:31 a.m. the New Orleans Fire Department (NOFD) responded to a 911 call from residents at 1511 South Liberty Street reporting a fire on the corner of Martin Luther King and South Liberty Street. Fire units arrived within three minutes to find two vacant single story, double camelbacks dwellings located at 2300-2302 and 2304-2306 Martin Luther King fully involved with fire. There were no utilities connected to the unoccupied structures. The fire quickly spread to 1511 South Liberty Street a two story, single occupied dwelling where six family members were asleep. The residents were awaken by the smoke and heat and notified the fire department.

New Orleans, LA. – On Monday, September 08, 2008 the New Orleans Fire Department (NOFD) responded to a 911 call reporting a fire at Myrtle Banks School on Oretha Castle Haley Boulevard. The first company arrived on the scene within two minutes finding a three-story, wood frame vacant school with flames coming from third floor windows extending through the attic. Firefighters initially attempted an interior attack, but were forced to take a defensive position as the fire quickly advanced to a four alarm.

7/31/08 - Three Alarm Fire: InterContinental Hotel, 444 St. Charles Avenue

On July 30, 2008 at 9:15 p.m. the New Orleans Fire Department received several 911 calls stating that there was a fire on the 3rd or 4th floor of the Inter Continental Hotel. When firefighters arrived, they found fire coming from several 3rd floor windows and spreading to the 4th floor. The fire started on the 3rd floor in a service area near a banquet hall and laundry room.

New Orleans, LA. – Tuesday July 22, 2008 at 11:25 a.m. the New Orleans Fire Department responded to a 911 call stating that Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church at 411 N. Rampart St was on fire. A fire engine company was a few blocks away, conducting daily fire hydrant inspections, when they noticed the smoke rising from the church, the engine company suspended hydrant inspections and arrived at the Church to find fire at the rear of the second floor.

The guest speaker will be Lt. Col. Jerry W. Sneed, Director of Emergency Preparedness for the City of New Orleans. The NOFD will graduate 21 recruits (18 NOFD recruits and 3 Kenner recruits) to the rank of Firefighter.

6/14/08 - Two-Alarm 3000-02 Banks St.

The New Orleans Fire Department (NOFD) responded to a 911 call reporting a fire at the corner of Banks St. and S. Gayoso St. The first company arrived on the scene at 9:31 a.m. finding a two-story, wood-framed, vacant, double occupancy dwelling fully engulfed in flames. A second alarm was struck immediately. Firefighters managed to stop the fire from spreading to adjacent residences in the rear and side of the structure, which collapsed and burned to the ground. The owner of the property was on the scene and stated that clean-up was being done, but no construction had started on the property. Entergy Gas was called to the scene and used a bobcat to clear debris, enabling firefighters to reach smoldering wood beneath the collapsed roof of the structure.

The fire was listed as under control at 11:54 a.m. The cause of the fire is currently under investigation.

6/8/08 - 3-Alarm Fire 1831 Carondelet St.

Sunday June 8, 2008 at 1:10 a.m. the New Orleans Fire Department responded to a 911 call about a fire at 1831 Carondelet Street. The first company arrived on the scene at 1:15 a.m. finding a two-story wood frame structure heavily involved and threatening extension to adjacent buildings. A second and third alarm was dispatched due to the close proximity of a multi-family dwelling at 1839 Carondelet Street and First Emanuel Baptist Church at 1829 Carondelet Street. The multi-family dwelling had to be temporarily evacuated for safety while firefighter obtained control of the fire. There was no damage to the multi-family dwelling and tenants where allowed to re-enter after 45 minutes. First Emanuel Baptist Church received minor interior and facial damage from the flames and radiant heat. The fire building 1831 Carondelet Street received heavy damage to the second floor attic and roof. The building was being utilized as an Annex by First Emanuel Baptist Church. No injuries were reported. The cause and origin of the fire are currently under investigation.

New Orleans, LA. – Friday, June 06, 2008 at 9:05 a.m. the New Orleans Fire Department responded to a 911 call about a fire at 7217 Chef Menteur Hwy. The first company arrived on the scene at 9:10 a.m. finding a two-story vacant apartment complex with flames through the roof.

6/3/08 - Overturned 18-wheeler at the corner of Tchoupitoulas St. and Calliope St.

New Orleans, LA. – At approximately 2:18 p.m. the New Orleans Fire Department responded to the call of a multi-vehicle accident involving injury at the corner of Tchoupitoulas and Calliope streets. The responding company notified Fire-Alarm immediately that this was possibly a hazardous material incident. Upon arrival the captain of the Haz-Mat unit declared this a Level-One chemical incident.

5/10/08 - 3-Alarm Fire 801 Frenchman St.

New Orleans, LA. – Saturday, May 10, 2008, at 11:16 a.m. the New Orleans Fire Department (NOFD) responded to a 911 call of heavy smoke coming out of a building at the corner of Dauphine and Frenchman streets. Upon arrival, to 801 Frenchman St., firefighters found heavy smoke coming from the front vent in the buildings attic.

3/21/08 - 3 Alarm Fire 2706 S. Claiborne Avenue

At 8:44 P.M., the New Orleans Fire Department responded to 2706 S. Claiborne Avenue, formally known as the ILA Building. The 2-story commercial structure had heavy smoke pouring from second level windows. The first companies on the scene found signs of forcible entry and said it appeared to have started at the top of the stairs on the second floor. Investigators found ample evidence of vagrancy and smoking materials throughout the building. Property management says the building was regularly maintained and had to be secured every 3 to 4 weeks. The incident was placed under control at 10:00 P.M. and there were no reported injuries.

3/20/08 - 4 Alarm Fire Saint Ann Street and North Claiborne Avenue
At 19:38 the New Orleans Fire Department responded to a 911 call to 1700 St. Ann Street. The first company arrived in 4 minutes to find a vacant 3-story wood frame dwelling heavily involved and threatening extension to adjacent buildings. The incident commander immediately advanced alarms to contain damage to the fire building. Utilities were disabled at the corner of St. Ann and Claiborne aiding firefighters in positioning trucks to put as much water on the structure as possible, while police monitored interstate traffic due to heavy smoke hindering visibility. No injuries were reported and the cause of the fire is under investigation.

3/13/08 - Two-Alarm Fire 7801 Earhart Blvd

The New Orleans Fire Department responded to a fire, at 7801 Earhart Blvd, Thursday, March 12 at approximately 9:53 p.m. The first company arrived on the scene at 9:57 p.m. and immediately struck a second alarm. The fire involving a single story commercial structure was brought under control at 10:10 p.m. and confined to the room of origin. Short-circuited electric wires are listed as the cause of the fire.

3/5/08 - Three Alarm Fire 215 North Rampart Street

Today the New Orleans Fire Department responded to a 911 call of a fire at 215 North Rampart Street. When the first company arrived on the scene they saw a four story brick warehouse building with smoke and fire protruding out various windows. Second and third alarms were struck when firefighters noticed two workers on the roof trapped. As firefighters extinguished the fire other firefighters rescued the workers and removed them out of harms way using the interior stairwell. The first floor of the building was being used as a parking garage. A vehicle caught fire and spread throughout the un-occupied building. Firefighters did an excellent job containing this very dangerous fire in an extremely hazardous building.

3/4/08 - Two Alarm Fire 810 St. Peters

Tuesday, March 04, 2008 the New Orleans Fire Department responded to a two (2) alarm fire at 810 St. Peters street in the French Quarters. The first arriving companies found fire on the second floor and had begun to spread to the third floor. As firefighters fought to contain the blaze from spreading to the apartments at the rear and both sides, it broke through to the attic. This three (3) story brick apartment is a vacation condo and was unoccupied at the time of the fire. The cause of the fire is under investigation at this time.

The New Orleans Fire Department responded to several suspicious fires this morning in the uptown area.

The first call was received at 5:11 a.m. when firefighters responded to a one alarm fire at 1739 St. Andrew. An automobile was ignited and damage was contained in a garage.

At 5:38 a.m. firefighters responded to a two alarm fire at 2228 Claiborne Avenue (Alexis Apartments) received heavy damage.

2/25/08 - Retired Superintendent Chief Warren McDaniels of NOFD passed away

Retired Superintendent of the New Orleans Fire Department, Chief Warren McDaniels passed away Sunday, February 24, 2008. Chief McDaniels, a 33yr veteran of the department, became the ninth superintendent of the NOFD in 1993 and was the first African-American to head the department. At the current time funeral arrangements have not yet been finalized, D.W. Rhodes Funeral Home will be handling the services.

2/14/08 - Fire Department Recieves $650,000 Grant To Assist With Firehouses

The New Orleans Fire Department (NOFD) was awarded a $650,000 grant from Lowe’s Charitable and Educational Foundation for the renovation of 10 and repair of 4 firehouses throughout New Orleans. During the 2005 storm, 23 out of 33 Fire Stations were flooded forcing Fire Fighters to operate out of temporary trailers. The repairs will range from the complete renovation of some stations (installing new mechanical systems, sheet rock, furnishings and fixtures and replacing roofs) to repairs of others (installing new lockers and ceiling tiles, running phone lines and replacing fuel tanks and fences.)

2/12/08 - Two Alarm Fire 1308 St. Bernard Ave

Tuesday, February 12, 2008 at 3:35 p.m. the New Orleans Fire Department responded to a 911 call reporting a fire at 1308 St. Bernard Ave. The first company arrived on the scene at 3:40 p.m., finding heavy smoke and fire coming from windows on both floors of an unoccupied two-story multi-unit dwelling. A second alarm was struck at 3:43 p.m. Fifteen units carrying 45 firefighters brought the fire under control at 3:55 p.m. The cause and origin of the fire are under investigation at this time.

1/29/08 - Three Alarm Fire Esplanade and North Derbigny

On Tuesday, January 29, 2008 the New Orleans Fire Department (NOFD) responded to a three alarm fire that destroyed a three story vacant dwelling. No injuries were reported and the fire is under investigation.

NOFD was dispatched at 8:45.p.m. to 1632 Esplanade Avenue within four minutes firefighters arrived on the scene to find a three story wood frame multi-unit structure fully involved. Due to heavy fire involvement and the poor condition of the structure, firefighters fought the fire externally. Hand hose lines and fire trucks with articulating booms were positioned and sprayed water on to the fire.

1/25/08 - Two Alarm Fire 2733 Freret St. @ Washington Ave.

Friday, January 25, 2008 at 7:17 a.m. the New Orleans Fire Department responded to a 911 call reporting a fire at the corner of Freret St. and Washington Ave. The first company arrived on the scene at 7:21 a.m. They found an unoccupied single story wood framed commercial structure fully involved with fire extending through the roof. A second alarm was struck at 7:39 a.m. Thirteen units carrying approximately 45 firefighters listed the fire as extinguished at 10:06 a.m. The cause of the fire is under investigation at this time.

1/25/08 - 2 Alarm Fire 923 Andry St. with Fatality

Friday morning at 4:39 a.m. the New Orleans Fire Department (NOFD) responded to a 911 call about a fire at 923 Andry St. The first company arrived on the scene at 4:44 a.m. to find the right side of the single family wood framed structure heavily engulfed in flames. A second alarm was struck at 4:47 a.m. A single fatality was confirmed at approximately 5:24 a.m. The victim was found in a bedroom inside the home. The 63yr old male lived alone and, according to family members, had limited mobility. The fire was brought under control at 5:36 a.m. The cause of death, as well as the fire’s cause and point of origin are currently under investigation.

1/21/08 - Four Alarm Fire at Erato and South Rampart

On Monday, January 21, 2008 the New Orleans Fire Department responded to a four alarm fire at Erato and South Rampart that destroyed three vacant structures. No injures were reported and the fire is under investigation.

NOFD was dispatched at 6:18 a.m. to 1239 South Rampart. Within one minute firefighters found two wood frame camel back structures fully involved in the attic. As the units prepared to fight the fire witnesses reported that someone might be trapped inside. Firefighters engaged in an interior attack to search for victims that may be trapped, but was forced to pull back due to the intense heat and the potential roof collapse.

Tuesday, January 15, 2008 at 8:39 a.m. the New Orleans Fire Department responded to a 911 call reporting a fire at the corner of Rampart St. and St. Ferdinand St. At 8:43 a.m. the first company arrived on scene. They found a single story wood framed multi-unit dwelling with fire fully engulfing the rear of the structure and extending through the roof. Within 5 min. of the first company arriving on the scene a second alarm was struck. Fifteen units carrying approximately 45 firefighters brought the fire under control at 9:09 a.m. The structure received heavy damage to several rooms of what appeared to be a boarding house. The cause of the fire is under investigation at this time.

Over 80% of New Orleans firefighters lost their homes and personal belongings in Hurricane Katrina. Among those belongings were the NOFD uniforms. While the NOFD do have the standard firefighting clothes, they do not have shirts and pants to serve as station wear that they had prior to Hurricane Katrina.

New Orleans Fire Department (NOFD) fire investigators believe a two alarm fire started in the late morning on Tuesday January 8, 2008 was intentionally set and Stephen C. Phillips was charged for starting the fire in Venetian Isles. Two NOFD firefighters were injured battling the blaze that also damaged three homes.

Fire units were dispatched at 10:20 a.m., within four minutes firefighters arrived to 4261 San Remo to find a two story wood frame dwelling with heavy fire involvement in the attic; additionally fire was engulfing 4271 San Remo Drive also a two story wood frame dwelling. The third dwelling located at 4251 San Remo a two story wood frame was occupied and sustained superficial facial damage from the radiant heat.

1/8/08 - TWO FIREFIGHTERS INJURED FIGHTING A TWO ALARM FIRE IN VENETIAN ISLES

Two firefighters were injured battling a two alarm fire late Tuesday morning, January 8, 2008, in Venetian Isles. The two alarm fire caused damage to three homes, in which two were under renovation. The fire is under investigation.

One firefighter fell approximately ten feet from the balcony at 4271 San Remo onto a thick grassy area; the firefighter was treated on the scene and released. The other firefighter was transported to a local hospital due to chest pains.
