Shipboard Firefighting Training Exercise

The New Orleans Fire Department (NOFD) will be conducting a Shipboard Firefighting training exercise Wednesday, November 4, 2009. The exercise, which will begin at approximately 8:00 a.m., will simulate a large-scale fire incident on board the MARAD Vessel Cape Knox, currently docked at the Poland Ave. Wharf. The NOFD, with assistance from the U.S. Coast Guard, Fireboat Kelley, the Office of Emergency Preparedness, Harbor Police, the Maritime Administration (MARAD) and Keystone Shipping is conducting this exercise to simulate a response and to evaluate the current Shipboard Firefighting Incident Command System. During this exercise firefighting procedures will be simulated with response vehicles on site. Smoke machines will be utilized to simulate a fire on board the vessel. This exercise will last approximately five hours and residents in the area should not be alarmed by the smoke and large concentration of emergency vehicles in the area of the Poland Ave. Wharf.
