3-Alarm Fire 926 Toulouse St.- Victim Found Unresponsive
Saturday, October 31, 2009 at 3:16 a.m. the New Orleans Fire Department
(NOFD) responded to a 911 call reporting a fire at 926 Toulouse St., in
the French Quarter. Upon arrival NOFD personnel found a two-story
dwelling with smoke exiting the attic. After investigating further,
District Chief Chris Mickal noticed a heavily involved fire in the rear
attic-area of the structure; second and third alarms were struck.
Residents in the area notified firefighters that the homeowner had not
exited the dwelling and may have still been inside. After forcing entry
into the heavily secured structure, firefighters located the victim on
the second floor of the dwelling. The unresponsive male victim was
carried outside the structure where firefighters noticed the victim had
sustained wounds unrelated to the fire. NOPD was notified immediately.
During the investigation of the incident NOFD personnel found an
accelerant, believed to be gasoline, on the scene that may have been
used to start the fire. The cause of the fire is listed as arson.
Twenty-one units carrying sixty-eight NOFD personnel responded to this
incident, bringing the fire under control at 3:59 a.m. NOPD should be
contacted for any information pertaining to the victim in this incident.
