PERSON EXTRICATED FROM A CONCRETE MIXER

Monday, October 12, 2009, at 2:28 pm. the New Orleans Fire Department responded to a person trapped in a Concrete mixer at a construction site at S. Dorgenois and Erato St. When Firefighters arrived they found a 19 year old male conscious and alert with his right arm entangled in a portable concrete mixer. Stabilization of the victim began immediately by EMS & NOFD. NOFD Flying Squad trained in Heavy Rescue began the tedious task of cutting away 1 inch rods which had pulled the worker’s upper body into the concrete mixer. Disentanglement from the mixer was accomplished after 1 hour of cutting and prying away all the rods with the use of the Jaws of Life, Sawzall and various Pry bars and cribbing. Once freed from the machine, New Orleans EMS transported the patient to the Trauma Center at LSU Public Interim Hospital in guarded condition.
