Criminal Records Section

The Criminal Records Division consists of the Expungement Unit, Subpoena Unit, and Latent Prints Unit.

Expungement Unit
Louisiana Criminal Code 44;9 et seq. governs the expungement law, which ensures an individual's right to privacy with the sealing and expunging of all criminal records ordered by the court. This is a complex and timely procedure. Each expungement is processed in the order it was received. Consequently, an Expungement, of an Orleans Parish Criminal Record can take 6 to 8 months for completion due limited personnel and extensive research procedures.

For information on the status of your “Motion for Expungement” and/ or “Motion to Set Aside Conviction” you need to contact either of the following:

  • Criminal District Court 658-9049
  • Magistrate Court 658-9025
  • Traffic Court 658-9397
  • Municipal Court 658-9700

The New Orleans Police only processes the information entered in the computer for a NOPD arrest.

For information concerning computer entries by Louisiana State Police contact 1-225-925-6040.

For information or arrest entered by surrounding parishes, contact the appropriate Law Enforcement Agency.

The New Orleans Police does not place your Criminal Record on any Internet site, and does not have the capability to alter or delete any information entered on any other Agency, Court and Private Entity’s website. If your information is found on the Internet you need to contact the appropriate Entity to assist you.  As stated in Louisiana Law R.S. 44:9 Section G.

“Louisiana ‘Expungement’ means removal of a record from public access but does not mean destruction of the record.  An expunged record is confidential, but remains available for use by law enforcement agencies, criminal justice agencies, the Louisiana State Board of Medical Examiners, the Louisiana State Board of Nursing, the Louisiana State Board of Dentistry, the Louisiana State Board of Examiners of Psychologists, or the Emergency Medical Services Certification Commission”.

Subpoena Request Procedures

All Subpoenas are made out to: “NOPD Custodian of Records”
Served to:
A.S.B.
715 South Broad St.,
New Orleans, Louisiana, 70119

Please DO NOT serve subpoenas to Crime Lab, Communications, and/or Evidence and Property Divisions; this only creates confusion and double work for us and days of delays for the requestor.

Note: All subpoenas are processed in the order received.

We DO NOT transcribe tapes of any kind.
- Staffing shortages and other circumstances or research requirements may delay a response. If you have not received your request in 30 working days, please contact us.

To ensure faster return, please note the following:

- Each request is issued a “Record Room Number” to prevent confusion and delays. A subpoena Unit member will send a confirmation letter or email with the Record Room Number.  This number is very important and once a request has been assigned a Record Room Number, all subsequent correspondence pertaining to that request will require the Record Room Number.

- Please do no ask for, “any and all information regarding item # …or John Doe.” This is too broad a request and creates considerable time delays. When asking for documentation, specific information is needed to complete your request.

It should be noted, many Public Record Requests / Subpoenas or Civil Court Subpoenas require consultation with our District Attorney’s Office/City Attorney’s Office. This in turn may cause an additional delay of several weeks.
