The Bureau of Nutrition is responsible for coordinating the nutrition education in all health department programs for children and adults. We administer the programs that provide supplemental foods and nutrition education to eligible low-income persons.

Food For Families/Food For Seniors Commodity Supplemental Food Program
The Public Health Nutrition staff for the CSFP provides the nutrition education component for the Program through tasting recipes prepared using the CSFP foods, nutritional handouts, cooking classes, demonstrations, films and slide show presentations, as well as a quarterly newsletter. Recipes are also demonstrated in the sites by the LSU Extension Services Staff in surrounding parishes.

Women, Infants and Children Program
Nutrition Counseling and Education for the WIC clients are provide by WIC Nutrition Educators in Health Centers who present information on a specific nutritional theme to the general waiting room population each day. They also provide individual counseling to explain WIC procedures to both new and returning patients on topics such as infant formula preparation, sterilization of bottles, feeding problems and weaning.

Early Periodic Screening Diagnosis Treatment (EPSDT) St. Bernard community Clinic
In addition to the two Federal Nutrition Programs described above, Nutrition Services also provides nutrition education for patients that are undergoing EPSDT testing. Patients being treated at the St. Bernard Community Health Clinic are also provided nutritional counseling.

Health Care For The Homeless
A registered dietitian also works at the Health Care for the Homeless Clinic providing counseling for clients with nutritional problems as well as basic nutrition education for all of the clinic's patients.

Booker T. Washington School Based Clinic/Carver School Based Clinic
The Carver and Booker T. Washington School Based Clinics have a Registered Dietitian to counsel teenagers on their nutritional needs, including pregnancy, and infants and child nutritional needs.
