NAACP Freedom Banquet
Mayor accepts Daniel Ellis Byrd Award

On Saturday, June 20th Mayor Nagin was presented with the Daniel Ellis Byrd Award at the 2009 NAACP Freedom Banquet in recognition of his outstanding contributions to the community. Daniel Ellis Byrd was a past president of the New Orleans chapter of the NAACP, and he and his wife were extremely influential in the civil rights movement in the 1940’s and 1950’s. Byrd made some of his most significant contributions in the area of political rights in that he worked hard to encourage registration amongst black voters in the area. Mayor Nagin was honored and humbled to be one of the recipients of this award, and to accept it on behalf of the citizens of New Orleans.
