FIXING STREETS
Street Repairs Funded by Disaster Community Development Block Grants

Crews recently began construction work on two roadway rehabilitation projects funded by disaster community development block grants (d- CDBG). St. Roch Avenue from N. Roman Street to St. Claude Avenue will received approximately $850,000 in rehabilitation repairs. Douglass Street from Forstall Street to Lamanche Street, Andry Street from N. Peters Street to Douglass Street, and N. Peters Street from Andry Street to Flood Street will receive approximately $890,000 in rehabilitation repairs.

The projects will include the removal of the top surface of pavement, repairs to the base where needed, overlay of new asphalt and installation of Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) compliant ramps on sidewalks. Barriere Construction Co. was awarded both construction contracts through the City’s public bid process. Julien Engineering will provide construction inspection services.

The rehabilitation of St. Roch Avenue from N. Roman Street to St. Claude Avenue is the first of multiple economic development and recovery projects to reestablish the historic St. Roch Market and the surrounding area. The Department of Public Works and FEMA recently completed the first round of approved FEMA-Eligible Roadway and Sidewalk Patching Repairs throughout the St. Roch area. In addition, projects totaling approximately $5 million are under design for the rehabilitation of the historic St. Roch Market, the St. Roch Avenue neutral ground, and the Harold Sampson (St. Roch) Pool and Playground.

Both projects are anticipated to be completed by July 2010.
